Kovalchuk and half of the KHL comes to mind when thinking about players who are not in the NHL yet are likely better than Strome today. Alex Debrincat, Sergachev, Chabot and McAvoy(who played in playoffs but doesn't count towards rookie games) are junior players who are legitimate contenders in that as well.
He's going to be a fine player. He's not going to be a number one C in the NHL next year no matter how much you want him to be. Being sent back to junior twice on a bottom three NHL team is not a fluke. He just was not ready. He has not cemented his two way acumen and is prone to cheating defensively. Arizona is literally devoid of a single potential game breaking prospect. Keller, Domi, Strome, duclair, perlini and Crouse all literally project to complimentary players. Not Franchise cornerstones. Think Rangers, after a few years. Not Chicago or Pittsburg. |

Uninformed opinion stated as fact.
Strome projects to be a star player, #1 centre allstar. He isn't going to enter the NHL like that, as almost no one does, but come on. I love how you say he's 'prone to cheating defensively' when that is in no way your observation, nor anyone elses. If you said that about a player who scored 2 points a game it would be ridiculous - if he cheats defensively its because he can and because he's playing in a league that isn't worthy of him.
And he was definitely ready last year. Unfortunately, people just assume NHL teams are infallible and all their decisions are correct. The real truth is that Arizona is woefully conservative with their prospects, possibly out of fear of having to pay them sooner. I can only go on my personal experience, but it seems to me its better to struggle in a harder league than make a joke out of an easy one. |

Strome is never going to win the Calder. You can't put those kind of points up playing 10 minutes a night. Tippett is never going to take any of Shane Doan's 20+ minutes a night away for a rookie |

Calm down a little here James. You can defend Strome without going full fanboy mode.
He has done nothing in the NHL yet. Many players looked great in juniors only to fail at the NHL level.
You are already suggesting he projects to be an allstar! Nothing I have seen from Strome leads me to believe he is a comparable player to John Scott. |

Some players fall back to junior habits because it makes them the best player in the juniors.
Some players use the juniors to work on NHL habits and get fewer points because they'd rather play a more responsible game.
You can guess which one Strome is. My guess is that he's going to be spending time in the AHL next season...
Edit: want to add that Spezza turned into a #1 center, but it took him a while, too... |

Excellent player, fantastic potential... but has proven nothing yet.
The hyperbole is fun, as always, but there's a long road in between season 1 and the Hall of Fame. |

Projects to be a star player... I actually watch junior games. He sits high in his own zone and relies too much on individual skill to win his battles. Skills great, good positioning is a requirement in the NHL.
He should've been in the AHL not junior that we can agree on. There have been so many junior phenoms that couldn't crack the NHL predicated on my above statements.
Struggling in the NHL can be hugely detrimental to a players development. This is not conjecture, this is fact.
